My Occupational Therapy experience provides a unique insight when working with people threatened or impaired by the aging process, for those recovering from physical injury, or illness, conditions related to psychological, or developmental disabilities. As a licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant, I use my therapeutic skills to assess the clients activities of daily living, work, and leisure activities around the home to maximize their level of function, safety and independence, therefore promoting their quality of life.
Occupational therapy services specialize in activity analysis while accessing balance, coordination, endurance, safety awareness, strength, attention, problem solving, vision, communication and other various functions while performing daily tasks. We specialize in understanding the interrelationships among the physical, psychological, and social aspects of illness, injury and aging. Various physical challenges may require adaptations to preserve joint integrity, and provide pain relief. A good understanding of anatomy and how the body moves is necessary for maintenance of good body mechanics and prevention of muscular deformity. For an individual with cardiac or breathing challenges, other recommendations would be suggested to preserve their energy, and simplify their work tasks in order to make it through their day successfully.
Many needs for safety and accessibility can be addressed during a Home Assessment. The self care activities of daily living (ADL’s) of bathing, dressing, medication management, etc., as well as other instrumental activities of daily living (preparing and cooking meals, laundry, home maintenance chores) and any hobbies or, leisure activities can be accessed and provided solutions for maintaining these activities.
As we age, cognitive changes are often experienced, as well as hearing and vision loss, making common tasks gradually more challenging. Training and experience in communicating with persons inflicted with age related diseases or physical disabilities is imperative to successfully managing a stressful life transition.
